7.5/10 in this guide
IONOS has the highest score in this guide. £2.40/mo for the intro period, then £6.00/mo inc VAT. 1 vCore, 2 GB RAM, 60 GB NVMe. About £205 over 3 years.
Advertised by the host as £2/mo for 3mo, then £5/mo (ex VAT).

Why scores differ from the homepage. Every guide uses the same six score components but weights them for the job. This one counts guide features (35%) and renewal price (25%) most; the homepage's all-round score gives renewal price the biggest share. So IONOS scores 7.5 here and 6.2 overall (#7 on the homepage, where WebHosting UK is #1). See this guide's weights · Methodology
Lowest 3-year cost is not the same as the top score. 123 Reg has the lowest 3-year total in this guide (£172 inc VAT, against £205 for IONOS) but scores 5.2/10 here, because the guide score weighs more than the 3-year total. Check the terms on its plan before you buy: some of the lowest prices need a long term paid upfront.

VPS plans are scored on specs per pound and whether a managed option exists (35%), renewal price (25%), support, Trustpilot and UK data centre. Entry-level VPS plans vary widely in what's included, so check the specs column as well as the price. IONOS scores highest at 7.5/10.
This guide now includes the developer clouds (DigitalOcean, Vultr, Akamai Cloud/Linode and Hetzner) alongside UK hosts' VPS plans. We score each on a comparable 1 vCPU / 2 GB plan where one exists. The clouds bill in US dollars or euros by the hour with a monthly cap, so we convert to pounds at a published exchange rate; the amount you pay will move with the rate.
Cloud hosting for developers in the UK
- UK locations: DigitalOcean (London), Vultr (London and Manchester) and Akamai Cloud (two London regions) all offer UK regions. Hetzner has none: its EU locations are in Germany and Finland, which may matter for latency or data-residency policies.
- Billing: hourly with a monthly cap on all four, so test servers cost pennies. UK hosts' VPS plans are usually monthly or annual in pounds.
- Support: developer clouds are unmanaged; you run the OS, updates and security. Akamai lists phone support day and night; DigitalOcean and Vultr are ticket-based on standard accounts; Hetzner offers phone support Mon-Fri 8am-6pm CET.
- Managed options: if you don't want to run a server, look at the managed plans marked here, or at managed WordPress hosting (Cloudways runs managed servers on DigitalOcean, Vultr and Linode).
Comfortable running your own server? Unmanaged VPS providers such as Contabo offer far more vCPU and RAM per pound, but price in euros and add a UK location surcharge; see also worth a look below. If you'd rather not manage a server, a managed option (marked in the specs and score) costs more but includes help with the OS and security.
